Hindsight Is 20/20
Have you ever looked at a picture of yourself from a younger age and thought “Why did I hate my body so much? I look great!” Leaving yourself with the longing to just be able to go back and tell yourself or even to look like that once again. This is diet culture. This is the conditioning of (mostly) girls, who then become women. We are ingrained with an impossible beauty standard to work towards. We are told that thin = health and happiness. It begins at a very young age. We restrict, we over exercise, we learn to loathe our bodies as we reach for something that is impossible. This keeps us stuck in the loop, ashamed of our ‘failings’ and dishing out money to the latest trends in diet culture. Intuitive Eating is the antidote to this toxic diet culture, a coming home to self.
It Is A Lie
Once you understand the human body and lean into the awe of all it is capable of, you begin to unlock the chains of diet culture and move closer to intuitive eating. This undoing opens the space to move from shame and loathing to love and acceptance. When you love someone, you want to fill them with all the things that are most nourishing for them, including food. From a young age, our trust in our inner knowing is overridden through demanding, restricting, and outright ignoring the messages our body is communicating to us. Most people can’t even imagine what it would feel like to work in harmony with their body, to have a keen sense of what it needs and how it would feel to honor that. Most of us have learned to disconnect from those messages, to quiet them. We no longer trust our ability to know how to care for our own body. Intuitive eating brings us back to our body where we feel safe and well cared for.
So Now What?
Intuitive Eating repairs this relationship with self, undoing all the harm of diet culture. It is challenging work to unlearn and relearn all we thought we understood about health and wellness. Yet it is the only path to true health. Are you new to this concept/journey? I would encourage you to begin here, listening to our free series on Prioritize Your Health
